ShivaShakti

Even as you sit in quiet stillness, you sit amongst constant vibration and flow. The divine marriage of energy and consciousness: Shakti and Shiva.

Shakti energy, Mother nature, earth energy, is always swirling, shifting, growing and changing, providing nurturing and abundance. While her masculine counterpart, Shiva energy, is still; pure witness consciousness that pierces through the flow with steadfast observation.

Only when Shiva and Shakti combine can creation and transformation arise. Until energy is impregnated with consciousness it is ignorant, disordered, and aimless. Energy alone can produce nothing; consciousness bestows upon it content, form and direction. Conversely, consciousness without energy is dormant power, sleeping, and on its own is unable to be the cause of anything. (chakras.net)

One cannot exist without the other. And so on our mats we experience this divine union of flow and awareness in every breath. Shakti energy guides us as we flow from pose to pose with the rise and fall of the breath, and as we hold poses in stillness, Shiva energy guides us to stay and to observe as the heat rises. Together they work hand in hand to guide us towards our highest potential. Not to be immune to the rising and falling of life, but to welcome in the tides and experience them fully, with trust and awareness that our highs and lows, lightnesses and darknesses are part of a greater whole. There are times we close our eyes to let go completely and flow, there are times we close our eyes to set the dristi deep within and watch, and there are those special times when we do both.

Perhaps you offer yourself these words as a blessing:

I wish for you the blessing of the Divine Mother who lives within you as energy and vitality, and the blessing of the Divine Father who resides within you as consciousness and knowledge. May they always take care of you, protect you and guide you, and in their infinite love lead you to the cosmic consciousness.
