Lessons are taking place virtually via Zoom until further notice as a covid-19 precaution.
Maria has been teaching private lessons for 15 years. She currently teaches in the greater Portland, ME area, out of her home in South Portland. Many of her students are members of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and are regularly accepted into Maine's district and All-State festivals, as well as go on to major in music. Each Spring, Maria holds a studio recital for students to have the opportunity to perform a solo piece with a piano accompaniment. She is the clarinet instructor and chamber music coach for the Southern Maine Music Academy [SoMMA] held each summer at USM, the clarinet coach for the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, and is also applied music faculty at Bates College.
Maria offers private instruction in the following areas:
Western Classical clarinet (Music theory traditionally studied in the U.S.)
Middle Eastern clarinet (Turkish and Arabic modal theory)
Nay flute (Arabic modal theory)
Teaching Mission Statement
My purpose as a private instructor is to learn about your goals and to help you achieve them; whether you aspire to become a professional musician, to learn the clarinet or nay as a hobby, or anything in between.
I believe that developing a strong foundation for all aspects of playing a wind instrument lies in awareness of how the body uses the breath, so I will work with you to emphasize correct posture, relaxation, and breathing techniques. I strive to guide you to become your own greatest teacher, by encouraging you to listen carefully to your own playing and by helping you to set goals and learn effective practice techniques.
To me, playing music is all about communication: with the audience, with the other musicians we are playing with, and with ourselves. Like any exercise of the body, a musician must practice scales and exercises to strengthen his/her technique, but ultimately, it is essential to keep in mind why you play music. I believe in nurturing the gift of music to express and explore parts of ourselves that may not be reached with words alone, building bridges of community across cultures.
