My home studio in Portland, ME is open for in-person instruction. Lessons are also available online via Zoom.

I have been teaching private clarinet lessons for over 16 years. Many of my students are members of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, are regularly accepted into Maine's district and All-State festivals, and go on to major in music. I am the clarinet instructor and chamber music coach for the Southern Maine Music Academy and Portland Youth Wind Ensemble both at the University of Southern Maine, and am on applied music faculty at Bates College for Arabic nay.

Teaching Mission Statement

My purpose as a private instructor is to learn about your goals and to help you achieve them, whether you aspire to become a professional musician, learn the clarinet or nay as a hobby, or anything in between.

I believe that the foundation for all aspects of playing a wind instrument lies in awareness of how your body uses your breath, so I will work with you to emphasize optimal breathing techniques, posture, and relaxation.

I will guide you to become your own teacher by encouraging you to listen critically to your playing, helping you to set goals, and showing you effective practice techniques.

To me, playing music is all about communication: with the audience, with the other musicians we are playing with, and with ourselves. Like any exercise of the body, a musician must practice exercises to strengthen their technique, but ultimately, it is essential for us keep in mind why we play music. I believe in nurturing the creativity within each of us to connect with and express through music parts of ourselves that may not be reached with words alone.

Chamber Music and Sectionals

I am an experienced clarinet sectional teacher and chamber music coach for clarinet choir and woodwind quintet and am available to visit your school for group instruction.
